Our story
How it all started
Our story starts way back in June 1991 when an enthusiastic young printer from Houghton-le-Spring spotted an opportunity, borrowed £400, and since has gone on to create one of the largest independent printers in the North East of England.
From a young age, Michael had a few entrepreneurial endeavours, then whilst working for a Washington based Printer responded to an ad on the radio for business start-up assistance he called to see the manager of the Enterprise workshops offered by Sunderland Council…the rest as they say is history.
An alliance with Tony Moore and a move to a dedicated printing unit in Washington in 1997 were both major steps in building the business.

Investment in Technolgy
Over the years technology and techniques have advanced remarkably. We’ve invested continuously and grown our operations from that first small workshop in Houghton-le-Spring to a 16,000 sqft. facility in Washington employing over 30 staff and servicing hundreds of customers daily. We have also acquired numerous businesses along the way and in doing so, maintained and protected many highly skilled printing jobs that may otherwise have disappeared.
Aztec has embraced new printing methods and innovative techniques. We have a range of printing machines including lithographic, sheet-fed digital machines, reel-to-reel, and large format. You name it, we can probably do it. And if we can’t, we’ll certainly know someone trusted who can.
The team at Aztec is like one family. We have more retirements than people leaving. Our core team has been settled for a long time, we still have our first employee who has been working for us for over 30 years!
Throughout it all we’ve built a solid reputation and foundation on doing the right thing and giving people chances. We’ve stood strong since 1991 and are now well-placed to face whatever the next 30 years throw at us…
